The Lunch Hour Face Lift

Wrinkle reduction occurs by tightening the skin through a process called Collagen Remodeling. Collagen is the "backbone" or the structural support of our skin. As we age, our collagen bands relax, causing our skin to sag and to develop lines and wrinkles.

At Revive MD, we offer the latest technology in laser treatments which improves the skin’s texture, color and tightness while reversing sun damage. This is a very safe and non-ablative procedure that gently passes heat into the collagen layer of the skin and is called the "lunch hour face lift."

How will my skin look after treatment? In most people, there is no sign that a treatment hasbeen done. A computerized scanner will safely and evenly provide a pattern of pulses over the entire face. The neck may also be scanned. This treatment can be completed in as little as 30 minutes and is safe on all skin types.

How many treatments will I need? Just like you cannot lift weights one time to tone muscles, you must begin with a series of treatments. A minimum of 3 treatments, 6 to 8 weeks apart, are recommended. Follow-up treatments will be needed to maintain continued collagen growth.

How long will it take to see results? Because we are stimulating your own collagen to grow, results will not be seen overnight. This is a gradual change which will be seen over a few weeks to two months. Your age and general health will affect your individual results. This new growth can result in up to a 40 percent tightening of skin.

May is National Skin Care Awareness Month!

As we start preparing for warmer weather it’s important to think about good sun protection practices for both you and your family.

The facts about skin cancer are staggering. Even though it is one of the more preventable types of cancer, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the world. It accounts for about half of all diagnosed cancers, including breast, lung and prostate cancer, according to The National Skin Care Foundation. More than one million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in The United States alone every year.

Most skin cancer cases are caused by excessive exposure to the sun, but it can also be caused by genetics. So, how can you protect yourself? Here are some quick and easy ways to stay safe and healthy this summer:

  • Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day
  • Apply a generous amount (about a palm full) and reapply every 2 hours and after swimming, toweling dry, or excessive sweating.
  • Use sunscreen even on hazy or overcast days.
  • Seek the shade, especially between 10 am and 4 pm.
  • Avoid tanning and UV tanning booths.
  • Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses when you are in the sun.
  • Examine your skin head-to-toe every month and look for irregular-shaped or discolored moles or spots.

Sun protection is a fundamental step in keeping skin healthy and beautiful. Colorscience’s Sunforgettable mineral powder contains highly refined minerals that shield skin from the damaging effects of the sun and environment, helping to defend against the signs of aging.

      Why Sunforgettable® ?
  •  Instant physical protection
  • Very water resistant
  • Safe and non-irritating
  • UVA / UVB protection
  • Recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation
  • Used by leading Doctors across the country

It’s the Time of Year to Celebrate that Special Woman in your Life—Mom!

Did you ever wonder how the second Sunday in May became the official day to celebrate mothers? Mother’s Day has taken many forms and can be traced back to spring celebrations in ancient Greece honoring Rhea, the mother of the gods.

In England during the 1600’s, Christians celebrated a day honoring Mary, the mother of Christ. Eventually the 4th Sunday of Lent was set aside in order to honor motherhood and all mothers, called Mothering Sunday.

One of the earliest calls to celebrate Mother's Day in the United States was the "Mother's Day Proclamation" written by Julia Ward Howe in 1870. It was written in reaction to the carnage of the American Civil War.

The Mother’s Day we celebrate today was made an official holiday by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914. Wilson declared that the holiday offered a chance to "[publicly express] our love and reverence for the mothers of our country."

This year, Mother’s Day will be celebrated on Sunday, May 8th. Treat your mom and show her that you care with one of our Mother’s Day Specials:

How to Treat Skin Pigmentation

All kinds of skin can become pigmented. To minimize the discoloration in your skin, there are several options: topical treatments, chemical peels or microdermabrasion (which can all take some time for results to appear) or you can treat your pigmented skin with laser technology, where results are almost immediate. The only way to reduce or prevent pigment formation is by applying sunscreen to your skin every day (and by this we mean EVERY day). It surely takes some time and effort--and if you forget, even one day in the sun can start the melanin stampede on your skin. Applying sunscreen to your skin religiously can also have its downsides. Sunscreen blocks UV radiation from your skin, shielding important proteins such as collagen, elastin and keratin, which are all important factors in keeping skin smooth and firm.

Over the counter topicals can be of some help, but unless you know the ones to avoid you can create even bigger problems than using nothing at all. Chemical peels or DermaSweep (advanced Microdermabrasion) can treat pigmentation that has already formed. These procedures should be done at regular intervals and not only help to remove pigment, but also improve the overall appearance, health and radiance of your skin.

For those who want more immediate results, Fraxel is a non-invasive laser treatment which is designed exclusively for superficial pigmentation and helps reduce the effects of sun damage to the skin, as well as other skin pigment irregularities on and off the face. And because the Fraxel laser treats one fraction of tissue at a time while leaving healthy skin intact, Fraxel sun damage treatment delivers remarkable improvement with minimal downtime. This revolutionary laser treatment can help remove years from your appearance so you can regain a more youthful look.

Whatever treatment you decide is right for you, we are happy to provide a complimentary consult to discuss the options and how they might work for your particular issue. No one likes feeling like they look spotty and we have enough variety of treatment options to help you achieve the results you want. Please call (508) 366 7600 to schedule a free consultation.

All Hair was not Created Equal

Factors such as age, ethnicity, medications and hormone levels influence body hair appearance. These factors affect the length, coarseness, and color of our body hair. Laser technology offers a permanent and safe solution to eliminating unwanted or excessive hair. Permanent hair removal is not a “one size fits all” procedure. Studies have been conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston (where laser hair removal was invented) to understand how and why hairs react differently even on the same body. Studies with laser shows that the most effective treatments are preformed at intervals 5-6 weeks apart.

Additionally, the equipment used and strength of the laser beam play a major role in determining the effectiveness of your treatment and the amount of treatments needed.

Topical growth factors are essential in repairing Photodamaged skin (skin that has been damaged by the sun). TNS Essential Serum, an effective product that contains naturally secreted growth factors, can help you achieve the results you want.

What are growth factors and how do they work?

· They are proteins that regulate cellular growth and the activity of skin cells
· They help to maintain a healthy skin structure
· Through normal aging, the production and level of growth factors decreases, resulting in impaired skin repair, wrinkles and fine lines

TNS Essential Serum, found at Revive-MD, contains two distinct formulations, TNS Recovery Complex and APS Corrective Complex which act in synergy to transform and regenerate your skin for a more youthful appearance.

Clinical studies show TNS Essential Serum repairs damaged and aging skin as it contains a highly concentrated mixture of naturally secreted growth factors and a potent formulation of antioxidants, peptides, skin brightening agents and soothing agents.

Facts About Facial Wrinkles and Folds

The inevitable fact of life is that we all age, but with modern technologies and treatments, you can maintain your youthful good looks longer. Depending on the skin's condition, your doctor can recommend a customized treatment plan to address what might be bothering you. The key is to select the therapy that will best match the underlying problem.

Anti-wrinkle treatment can change the appearance of some of the damage done over time. It is never too late to start minimizing wrinkles or to obtain treatments to soften the lines and creases you already have.

Wrinkles form largely because the levels of collagen—a major component of the connective tissue in the skin that creates strength and flexibility—decreases over time. There are two major ways in which skin ages. The first is genetically programmed, intrinsic aging, which affects the skin all over your body. The second is photoaging, which results from the long-term effects of the sun. Other external factors may include smoking and pollution. The degree to which skin ages depends on genetics. For example, fair-skinned people will tend to show visible signs of aging earlier because their skin type makes them more susceptible to photodamage.

It is well known that 80% of the lines and wrinkles you see in the mirror were caused by the sun. The other 20% are the result of other factors such as smoking, aging, and facial expressions. Below is a description of the different types of wrinkles:

  • Fine wrinkles—superficial lines caused by the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers over time
  • Deep wrinkles—typically result from loss of skin tone and sagging or from repeated facial movement or expression
  • Static wrinkles—these are seen all the time, when the face is at rest or moving
  • Dynamic wrinkles—these are only obvious when facial muscles are engaged, as in smiling or frowning

Be sure to call us for a consultation regarding the wrinkle treatment that is right for you.

Eating for Beauty—How Fruits and Vegetables Can Give You a Beautiful Complexion

You already know that eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables is good for your health, but did you know they are also good at preventing premature skin aging?

Fruits and vegetables of differing colors contain diverse mixtures of phytonutrients (protective plant compounds) which can act as powerful antioxidants, protecting the body from harmful free radicals and helping to protect against certain chronic diseases such as cancer.

There is no substitute for eating a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, at least 7-13 servings every day is recommended by The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), but if you're like most people you don't come anywhere close. The fruits and vegetables that we do end up eating tend to be over-processed, over-cooked, or too far removed from the field.

That's why there's Juice Plus+. It's a convenient, affordable, and natural whole food based nutritional product providing nutrition from 17 vegetables, fruits, and grains. It is clinically proven to help you bridge the gap between what you should eat and what you do eat, every day and I highly recommend it to my patients who are looking to improve their complexions and maintain a healthy diet.

Fight Aging - Steps to Take Right Now!

We know that there’s no set age when your face will recommend that you begin fighting the aging process, but we do know this: it’s never too early to begin!

In your 30's
Your skin cell turnover starts to slow down, which makes your skin drier and thinner. To combat these changes, make sure to:
• Drink lots of water
• Begin a skin regimen with PCA SKIN® Clinical Care Products, which dramatically improves skin health and helps provide a glowing, radiant complexion
• Remove your makeup every night
• Wash your face and apply a night cream to drench thirsty skin overnight
• Get a regular microdermabrasion to keep your skin soft and radiant
In your 40's

You should commit to a skin care regimen that features regular exfoliation, deep cleansing and moisturizing. We carry Physician-grade products, which offer much better results than over-the-counter lines and we offer free consultations.

The correct combination of peels, laser treatments and fillers will prompt the collagen under your skin to grow again, helping to slow the appearance of skin aging!

Beneficial treatments for patients in their 40’s include:
• Chemical peels, which are great for getting rid of superficial wrinkles
• Laser resurfacing treats Rosacea, age spots and improves skin texture
• Photofacials are quick treatments that provide excellent results and are kind on the budget
• Botox/Dysport and Fillers retain the youthful fullness in your skin and plump away wrinkles
In your 50's
Skin is much drier now because of lower estrogen levels. You may notice that your skin has also become looser. As a result, the underlying facial fat pads can drop or shift, giving your face an aging appearance. Skin-tightening laser treatments as well as Liquid Facelifts can renew your appearance and plump up your features to that of 10-15 years earlier. Looking younger will help you to feel younger, enhancing your energy and enthusiasm.

What you Should Know Before Making a Chemical Peel Appointment

Why should I have a chemical peel?

When administered properly, a chemical peel can be used to reduce wrinkles and fine lines, treat acne scars, remove hyper-pigmentation, and to control acne and rosacea.

What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a treatment that uses acids to break down the bonds between skin cells, promoting the release of dead skin. This action accelerates the production of fresh new skin cells.

What kind of results can I expect?

It is important to have realistic expectations of what a chemical peel can do before starting a series of treatments. The first goal of a chemical peel is to accelerate the rate of cell turnover in the skin. As we age, this rate naturally slows down, which can lead to dull, lifeless-looking skin. The second goal of a chemical peel is to contain the injury of the skin to the desired layers only.

Achieving the balance between the first and second goal is very complex and difficult to accomplish and requires a fully trained and experienced clinician. No matter what peel is used, a realistic expectation would be lighter, brighter skin with an improved texture.

How many times will I have to go through the procedure in order to obtain my desired results?

Usually peels are performed in a series of six but that number varies from person to person and will depend on the strength of the peel chosen and the goals of the individual. Peels can be booked anywhere from two weeks to one month apart. Generally acneic skin types can be treated every two weeks, sun-damaged skin every three weeks and aging skin once a month.

Interested in having a chemical peel? In celebration of two years in business, Revive-MD is now offering exclusive savings off of our Peel packages for the month of September! Click here for more information.

Drinking Plenty of Water—Does it Hydrate your Skin?

Okay, it’s not as fun to drink as wine, but water is the strongest weapon you have against lifeless skin.

To put it broadly, all the body’s processes rely on hydration, so if you’re not sipping throughout the day, you’re likely to have a slower metabolism, groggier head, and, yes, drier skin.

One study suggested that it takes a mere half-liter of water to create a measurable increase in the capillary blood flow to your body’s outer layer. That’s just over 16 ounces. Try doing that a few times a day and you’ll have a face like a baby’s bottom in no time.
